Algeria (al-jeer-ee-uh, الجزائر), officially the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria (الجمهورية الجزائرية الديمقراطية الشعبية), is an unitary semi-presidental people's republic in the Maghreb (Northwest Africa). Algeria is a sovereign state on the Mediterranean coast borderd to the northeast by Tunisia, to the southwest by the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Mali and Mauritania, to the southeast by Niger, and to the east by Libya. The capital and largest city is Algiers.

Algeria's current president is Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who has been president since 1999.
